Members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers recently appeared on The Howard Stern Show and were asked about touring with Nirvana. Anthony Kiedis, the band’s lead singer, revealed that he admired Kurt Cobain so much that he felt nervous around him. On September 24, 1991, RHCP released their breakthrough album ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magik.’ The band toured extensively in support of the album in the early 1990s. They were joined by a number of notable bands, including Pearl Jam, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Nirvana. The Smashing Pumpkins opened the tour’s first leg, but Nirvana replaced them when they left.
During a recent conversation, the band members reflected on their time touring with Nirvana, and guitarist John Frusciante explained that both Pearl Jam and Nirvana were exceptional bands. Still, the latter was distinct because they regarded them as an influential and respectable group. He also stated that Nirvana was always pushing them to be a better band and improve their live performances.
Later, Anthony Kiedis responded to a question about spending time with Kurt Cobain. Kiedis stated that he was nervous around Cobain because he admired him so much. The singer remembered that Cobain wasn’t a talker, but they had some good times together. Kiedis described Cobain as a relaxed, warm, emotional, and introspective person. The singer believes that the Nirvana frontman left an indelible legacy with his powerful music. When asked what it was like to spend time with Kurt Cobain, Kiedis said:
“I mean, I was usually pretty nervous whenever I was around him just because I was in awe, and he wasn’t the type to discuss being a frontman, he was just shy and in his energetic state, but Flea and I had some nice moments with him at some MTV show, where we snuck away and went backstage and just sat with him while he was getting ready to play.”
And it was a pleasant experience. He was loose, warm, inviting, and relaxed, and it wasn’t like he’d been on tour for a long time and was emotionally jumbled. He was perfectly content with himself. He was a beautiful man who left us with a lot of incredible music and energy.” RHCP discusses touring with Nirvana in the video below.
