There are countless reasons why late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury was and still is one of the greatest rock icons in the world. The rocker didn’t only release timeless albums and perform breathtaking shows, but he also did everything with the touch of his one-of-a-kind showmanship.
His unique artistry was one of the most significant aspects of Queen’s success and what Mercury was known for. He was such a legendary musician who cared for his fans that his very last words on camera were for his fans. Although the rocker was in great pain due to his illness, he still bid farewell to his fans in his way.
Freddie Mercury Passed Away At The Age of 45
According to his partner Jim Hutton, Freddie Mercury was diagnosed with AIDS in late April 1987, but the musician claimed in an interview to have tested negative for HIV around that same time. In fact, Mercury and his inner circle of friends continually denied the allegations about the illness for a very long time.
Meanwhile, Mercury’s illness got worse as he began to lose his sight and fell which is one of the reasons why he was unable to leave his bed. Moreover, the musician chose to hasten his death by refusing medication and only took painkillers to his very last day.
Eventually, Mercury called Queen’s manager Jim Beach to his Kensington home to prepare a public statement on November 22, 1991, to declare his illness to his fans. About 24 hours after issuing the statement, the singer passed away at the age of 45 at his home in Kensington on the evening of November 24, 1991.
