The Beatles icon Paul McCartney is one of the most celebrated songwriters of rock music. The musician’s collaboration with his bandmate, John Lennon, created timeless hits and paved the way for many other musicians who wanted to be successful songwriters.
Lennon-McCartney’s songwriting partnership gave birth to emotional songs for the Beatles, and the bassist also released numerous touching songs in his solo career. However, McCartney was once so moved by another band’s piece that he had difficulty listening to it without getting emotional.
A Beach Boys Song Makes Paul McCartney Emotional
During a previous conversation with BBC, Paul McCartney reflected on one of The Beach Boys’ songs, ‘God Only Knows.’ The band released the track with their 11th album, ‘Pet Sounds,’ on May 16, 1966. Brian Wilson and Tony Asher wrote the love song that is often named one of the most incredible lyrics and The Beach Boys’ best record.
Like many other music critics and fans, the Beatles icon revealed that whenever he hears that song, he starts to cry immediately. Paul McCartney said that the love song is perfectly executed and shows what a brilliant musician Brian Wilson is. Moreover, the bassist stated that he once performed ‘God Only Knows’ with Wilson and started weeping when they began playing together.
In an interview with BBC, McCartney said:
“‘God Only Knows’ is one of the few songs that reduces me to tears every time I hear it. It’s just a love song, but it’s brilliantly done. It shows the genius of Brian Wilson. I’ve performed it with him, and I’m afraid to say that during the soundcheck, I broke down.”
It’s no surprise that The Beach Boys’ ‘God Only Knows’ brings tears to Paul McCartney since the band’s lyrics portray a narrator who claims only God understands a life without their lover. Though some interpreted the song’s lyrics to have a suicidal inclination, Tony Asher said it wasn’t their intention to make such an impression.
