Why Roger Waters eliminated David Gilmour’s guitar solo from “Comfortably Numb” Jonathan Wilson Describes

Roger Waters guitarist Jonathan Wilson stated in a recent interview with Ultimate Classic Rock that Waters’ decision to perform “Comfortably Numb” without the classic guitar solo was a bold one. The classic song ‘Comfortably Numb’ was included on Pink Floyd’s eleventh studio album, ‘The Wall,’ which was released in 1979. Roger Waters, the group’s bassist, wrote the lyrics for the hit song, while guitarist David Gilmour composed the music. As one of the greatest guitar solos of all time, David Gilmour’s legendary guitar work has contributed to the song’s enduring status as a timeless classic.

Roger Waters left the band decades ago, but the bassist still performs Pink Floyd classics such as “Comfortably Numb” in his solo performances. Waters is currently on the road for his This Is Not a Drill tour, which began in Pittsburgh on July 6, 2022. The tour will end in Mexico City on October 15, 2022. On the setlist, the first song he performs is “Comfortably Numb.”

In a recent interview, the rock band’s touring guitarist Jonathan Wilson was asked about performing the iconic song without Gilmour’s iconic guitar solo. The guitarist explained that this particular demo was recorded at Waters’ residence. The bassist wanted them to perform the song in a slower tempo, and subsequently chose to use it as the tour’s introduction. Wilson believes it was Waters’s audacious decision to play “Comfortably Numb” without the guitar solo and to place it at the top of the setlist, which excited the remaining crew members.

Jonathan Wilson on Roger Waters’s decision regarding the song: “We did the demo for that particular version at that speed and in that key at his house. The verses were performed by both myself and Gus. As a demonstration, we carried it out just prior to the pandemic. I cannot recall why he instructed me to do that. This was simply something he suggested, and we complied: “Let’s try it slowly and down an octave.”

We did not even consider it. He returned to us and stated, “That was the show’s introduction.” It was like, “Holy crap, that’s incredible!” It is definitely daring. That was the last thing we did on our previous tour, so it serves as a cool bookend. It is therefore extremely audacious to begin in this manner. The crowds exclaim, “Wow, what the hell is happening?” It’s incredible.” The original version of “Comfortably Numb” can be heard below.
